About the event
In this beginner workshop, you will learn the basics of marbling on paper. Let your inner child take over! Each participant will have their own marbling vat where they will play with color and create fun, swirling designs. We will talk about traditional marbling processes such as combing patterns, but this class is more focused on the exploration of material rather than the mastery of traditional techniques. Each participant will leave with several sheets of their own marbled paper as well as a canvas pouch and access to marbling instructions so that they may marble at home!
About Claire and her Marbling business Tempered East
:
Tempered East is a contemporary take on water marbling and handmade papers. Marbling is a process that involves floating paints on liquid size to create patterns that are then transferred onto a porous surface. I marble paper, fabric, and wearables like hats and bandanas. Some of the marbled fabric I sew together to make new objects like pouches or pillows and other fabric I sell by the piece. I love to explore color and pattern within the confines of the marbling process. I also teach marbling workshops because I love to share the magic! In addition to marbled goods I make handmade paper and mixed media fine art pieces all inspired by the spiritual and physical realms of nature.
Claire is an artist and educator living in South Portland, Maine. Her work involves handmade paper, water marbling, and sewing that draws from nature and the human body. The objects she constructs from marbled fabric are functional pieces that celebrate color and pattern. From hats and scrunchies to silk ties and pillows she plays with multiple forms. She also teaches introductory marbling workshops. Her paper artworks are images built with a variety of traditional and non-traditional materials including natural plant fibers, saturated pigments, yarn and sewing scraps, and found objects.
