RISOGRAPH PRINTING
AT GROUNDED PRINTSHOP
Risograph printing, or simply "riso" is a hybrid between screenprinting and traditional photocopying that produces vibrant colors, unique textures, and Eco-friendly printing using soy based ink.
Originally developed in Japan in the 1980s, Riso machines were designed as a fast and cost-effective way to produce high-volume prints, with some machines able to do multiple colors, while others are capable of only printing one at a time. Organizations that needed to crank out mass amounts of prints would easily do so, and artists saw the creative potential in these machines.

RISO COLORS
Risograph printing is basically a love letter to layering and color. Each color is printed one at a time, using separate ink drums, so images are built up in passes rather than all at once. This means colors don’t mix the way they do in digital printing—they overlap, misalign, and interact in beautifully unexpected ways. Where two colors meet, a third color appears. Where things shift slightly (because they will), you get that signature Riso wobble that feels lively and handmade.
Layering in Riso is all about intention and play: deciding what prints first, what sits on top, and how transparent inks stack to create depth, texture, and surprise. You’re not chasing perfection but instead collaborating with the machine. The result is bold, vibrant prints that feel tactile, imperfect, and very much alive.
