Grounded accepts residency applications four times a year. Each application cycle covers a three-month residency window, giving artists the flexibility to choose the length of their stay based on their practice, schedule, and travel plans. Residencies may be as short as one week or extend for several weeks or months.

Should I Apply?

​The Grounded Printshop Artist Residency is designed to give artists the time, space, and resources to fully immerse themselves in their creative practice. Whether you're developing a new body of work, exploring a new medium, or simply looking for uninterrupted studio time, our residency offers a supportive environment within a thriving community of artists.

​

Residents become part of a creative ecosystem that includes printmakers, papermakers, ceramicists, fiber artists, illustrators, painters, and others. Throughout the residency, artists are encouraged to connect with the community through open studios, demonstrations, artist talks, or workshops, through community engagement can be tailored to each artist's interests and goals.

All residency options are open to both emerging and established artists. We welcome applications from creatives working across traditional, experimental, and interdisciplinary practices who are interested in spending time creating, connecting, and sharing their work within the Grounded community.

 

Cost

Grounded collects $150 per week. Consumable materials (Pulp, paper, ink, etc). are not covered by the fee. Residencies are self-funded, with rates intentionally kept below average to make the program more accessible. Artists are responsible for arranging and covering their own travel, materials, and lodging.

For artists who need a place to stay, Grounded has access to a dedicated residency apartment located just across the Erie Cemetery, which borders the Grounded property. The apartment is available to residents for $200 per week, providing a convenient and affordable option for those traveling to Erie for their residency.

Why Here? 

Because sometimes you want to spend a week making art somewhere that has shop cats, a garden, and climate control—and sometimes you want to get a little weird in a Rust Belt city that hasn't been polished into oblivion.

Grounded is a clean, spacious, organized place to work with character. We have shop cats, garden space, a movement and wellness space, regular movie nights and events, and the occasional Maker Markets. The Erie Food Co-op is nearby, and the bayfront is just 19 blocks away.

And then there's Erie.

Erie is a weird-ass place, in the best possible way. It's economically and racially diverse, a little rough around the edges, and still has plenty of the grit, contradictions, and creative energy that make a Rust Belt city interesting. Old industrial buildings are being repurposed alongside neighborhoods and businesses that have been here for generations. You can spend the afternoon wandering through an abandoned-looking industrial landscape and then go get the world's best donut at Mighty Fine or a truly top-tier pepperoni ball from International Bakery.

It's also possible to enjoy the rust without sacrificing the amenities. Yes, we're a Rust Belt city. Yes, we have (2) Wegmans.

And if the city starts feeling a little too urban, Lake Erie is right there. Grounded is about a 10-minute drive from Presque Isle State Park, with its 13 beaches, trails, forest, and miles of shoreline. You can spend the morning printing, the afternoon swimming in the lake (or ice fishing), and the evening eating something questionable-but-delicious.

Come for the studio. Stay for the weirdness, the lake, the food, and definitely the cats.
